Have you ever been in a situation where you wish to change a certain habit but you find it too difficult?

Like waking up early in the morning, exercising consistently, making your bed, drinking water after-hours, finding free time to rest, adopting reading habits, quit drinking or smoking, or even trying up fasting?

You find it’s so hard to be consistent when adopting doing an important thing or leave away any unproductive behavior?

Do you know why all of that happens to most people or even to you? All of that happens because they (you) don’t have strong willpower.

Willpower is the act of conditioning your mind and direct to a certain task without external interference, which means, with an intention and concentration. The good thing is, it is the kind of mental power that every human being can develop over a period of time.

Robin Sharman put it this way, willpower is the act of mastering your mind. Monitoring your thoughts and direct yourself into important tasks only.

Willpower development

Will power has been developed through different rituals practices like self-control, mediation & yoga practices, thoughts consciousness, and other related rituals that put the mind in its conscious state of wellbeing.

Self-control

Self-control will give your mind crucial power, especially in the decision-making process. That power will be used with your mind as a guide especially on the important things to do and unimportant things not to do. It is to have that courage and openness of saying YES or NO to certain things and be comfortable with what you have shared without regretting.

“Self-control is really nothing more than mind control.” — Robin Sherman

Meditation

The mind is so destructive sometimes. And mediation practices can calm the mind and help the mind to develop concentration and focus needed. A person is known has willpower if someone can focus on a certain task and be able to finish without interruption from the external environment while being present at the moment. Meditation also helps the human mind to be present during any certain performed action.

Thought Consciousness

Robin Sherman in his book, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari pointed out that

“Mental mastery starts with being able to control every thought that you think. When you have developed the ability to discard all weak thoughts and focus only on those that are positive and good, positive and good actions will follow.”

We become what we think about. All-time, all day. Learn to discard all thoughts that weaken you and adopt thoughts that strengthen you. Doing that helps to develop the willpower to the things that you want to think specifically, and not being interrupted by other destructive thoughts.

Self-discipline

If you don’t have self-discipline, an application of any productive action will be a myth to you. It’s through discipline that human beings can condition themselves to do something — and that’s willpower. Keep developing your self-discipline by doing what you say you will do. The time mostly used should be to the activities that are productive and helpful to you only.

Be the master!

You have to master your mind. By disciplining it or directing to the things that you will only need. If you let your mind decide for you all the time, then your mind will keep using you forever.

First, develop an awareness of the things that you want to stop or adopt then train your mind to accept that which you want to stop or adapt by replacing it with something else.

Like instead of thinking of your phone, go on and read a good book. Instead of buying too much meat, go on and buy some vegetables and other fruits. Doing that consistently, you will be in a process of training your mind the new habit and it will pick up so soon and your willpower will be developed.

“An abundance of willpower is one of the chief attributes of all those with strong characters and wonderful lives.” — Robin Sharma

Why it’s so important to develop your willpower?

• It’s only willpower that can help you to do all the things that you say you will do but the next day you feel like I can’t do it anymore.

• Its willpower that helps you to say No to someone and still be comfortable with your No without regrets.

  • It’s will power that will help you wake up early in the morning even though you feel like not doing it. Too cold, too sleepy!

Here are some other hits about willpower from Robins book, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari
  • Will power allows you to do what you said you would do when you said you would do it.
  • It is will power that allows you to get up at 5 am, in the morning to cultivate your mind through meditation or to feed your spirit by a walk in the woods when a cozy bed beckons you on a cold winter’s day.
  • It is will power that allows you to hold your tongue when a less actualized person insults you or does something you disagree with.
  • It is will power that pushes your dreams forward when the odds appear to be insurmountable.
  • It is will power that offers you the inner power to keep your commitments to others and perhaps even more importantly, to yourself.

Learn to develop your willpower today and enjoy what you always love to do. Let your mind work for you not against you.
